What is GPTBot?

GPTBot is OpenAI's web crawler, used to collect publicly available content for training and improving its models. It identifies itself with the user-agent GPTBot and respects robots.txt directives, so site owners can allow or disallow it. OpenAI also operates related agents — ChatGPT-User (for in-chat browsing) and OAI-SearchBot (for ChatGPT search) — each with its own user-agent. Allowing these crawlers is a prerequisite for ChatGPT to access and cite your pages; blocking them in robots.txt prevents that platform from surfacing your content.

Why it matters for Reddit marketing

A robots.txt rule that disallows GPTBot is a silent visibility killer: it can prevent ChatGPT from ever citing your site. The decision to allow or block is a real trade-off between protecting content from training and earning AI citations.

How RedditGrow helps

RedditGrow's own robots.txt explicitly allows the major AI crawlers, and the platform helps you audit where your brand should be present. The bigger lever, though, is third-party presence: even if a model never crawls your site directly, it can cite you through Reddit.
