Reddit is one of the most cited domains in AI search, but the exact share ranges from under 1% to about 60% depending on what a study counts. On Perplexity, Reddit was 6.6% of all citations in a 680-million-citation Profound dataset. On ChatGPT, it was 1.8% over the same period, and it has since swung from about 60% of responses down to about 10% (Semrush, 2025) and, in a provisional August 2026 reading, to 0.5% of citations (Promptwatch).
This page collects the sourced numbers, says exactly what each one measures, and ends with what to do about it. It is the data companion to Does ChatGPT Cite Reddit?. Last updated October 22, 2026.
Key takeaways
- Reddit was 6.6% of all Perplexity citations, 2.2% of Google AI Overviews citations and 1.8% of ChatGPT citations (Profound, 680 million citations, August 2024 to June 2025).

Reddit's citation share by engine
Profound analyzed 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025 and published two views of Reddit's share.
| Engine | Reddit share of all citations | Reddit share of the engine's top 10 sources |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 6.6% | 46.7% |
| Google AI Overviews | 2.2% | 21.0% |
| ChatGPT | 1.8% | 11.3% |
Source: Profound, AI Platform Citation Patterns, published June 5, 2025, updated August 2025.
Two things to take from the table. First, Reddit was the number one source on both Perplexity and Google AI Overviews by overall citation volume. On ChatGPT, Wikipedia led at 7.8% and Reddit followed at 1.8%. Second, the 46.7% figure often repeated online is a share of the top 10 sources on Perplexity, not a share of all Perplexity citations. The share of all citations is 6.6%.
Agenzy's later dataset, built on Peec AI tracking, shows a different order. Reddit was 3.0% of ChatGPT citations, 1.7% of Google AI Overviews citations and 0.6% of Perplexity citations, for 2.1% overall. Source: Agenzy, Which Sources Do AI Engines Cite? 2026, covering January 1, 2025 to September 7, 2026, 394,180 AI answers and 2,283,923 citations across 138 projects.
Where Reddit ranks among all cited domains
LLM Pulse publishes a rolling ranking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. In the version updated October 21, 2026:
| Rank | Domain | Share of AI answers citing the domain |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | youtube.com | 11.19% |
| 2 | reddit.com | 8.29% |
| 3 | google.com | 7.62% |
| 4 | facebook.com | 4.88% |
| 5 | linkedin.com | 3.17% |
Source: LLM Pulse, Top Cited Domains. The share is the percentage of AI answers in the window that cited at least one link on the domain, counting each domain once per answer. Answers with no citations are excluded, and the ranking is rebuilt daily. The page's own labels disagree on the window (the text says 7 days, the chart heading says last 90 days), and it gives no sample size, so treat it as a snapshot.
Semrush's 2025 study, which covered ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, found Reddit and LinkedIn among the top five most cited domains on all three, and Reddit listed first among Perplexity's top sources. Its ChatGPT figures are in the next section. Source: Semrush, Most-Cited Domains in AI, published November 10, 2025, from about 230,000 prompts and more than 100 million citations.
How much Reddit's ChatGPT share has moved
Reddit's presence in ChatGPT is the least stable number in this space.
- 2025. Semrush's weekly snapshots, July 14 to October 12, 2025, show Reddit in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August and around 10% by mid-September. Semrush's Sergei Rogulin said the timing overlapped with Google removing its num=100 search parameter (around September 11), that this was "not the only one" of the causes, and that the main reason was an attempt to avoid over-citing certain websites.
- 2026. Promptwatch data reported by Semrush shows Reddit at a steady 3.8% of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to August 7, 2026, and an average of 0.5% from August 14 to 17, an 86% decline. The article does not state Promptwatch's sample size. The same article reports that Reddit's share also fell in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, by 11% and 31% according to Axios, much shallower than the ChatGPT drop. It calls the size of the drop provisional, says Promptwatch cannot rule out a problem in its own data collection, and notes OpenAI told Yahoo Tech it does not set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites and still cites Reddit. Source: Semrush, Reddit's Citations in ChatGPT Fall, published August 26, 2026.
The Semrush article suggests one reading: Reddit may have moved earlier in ChatGPT's process, used to identify brands or topics before more scoped searches, rather than leaving the pipeline. That is the author's interpretation, not a measured fact.
How many brands see Reddit in their results
In the Agenzy dataset, Reddit appeared at least once in 128 of 138 tracked projects (92.8%). Per engine, it appeared in 77.5% of projects on ChatGPT, 61.3% on Google AI Overviews and 46.6% on Perplexity. So even on the engine where Reddit's overall share is small, most brands still encounter it somewhere in their tracked prompts.
A small independent sample points the other way. Orbit Media tracked 72 questions for three B2B brands, with 13,184 citations recorded in total. Its latest weekly run (data through August 23, 2026) found Reddit at 0% of citations on ChatGPT and Claude, 3% on Perplexity and 1% on Gemini. The author calls it a directional sample, not statistical proof. Source: Orbit Media, I Tracked 13,184 AI Citations Across 4 LLMs, published September 2, 2026.
Why the numbers disagree
| Study | What it counts | Reddit result |
|---|---|---|
| Profound | Share of all citations, and share of a top-10 list | 1.8% to 6.6% of all citations |
| Agenzy / Peec AI | Share of all citations in tracked projects | 2.1% overall |
| LLM Pulse | Share of answers with at least one Reddit link | 8.29% (October 21, 2026) |
| Semrush 2025 | Share of ChatGPT responses containing Reddit | about 60% to about 10% |
| Promptwatch | Share of ChatGPT citations | 3.8% to 0.5% |
A share of all citations is usually smaller than a share of answers that contain at least one Reddit link, because one answer can carry many citations. Prompt sets matter too: different questions surface different sources. Period matters most of all, given the swings above. Never compare two of these numbers without comparing what they count.
What to do with this data
Reddit's role in AI answers is large enough to plan around and unstable enough not to bet everything on one engine.
- Measure your own prompts. Pick the five to ten questions your buyers ask, run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and note whether a Reddit thread is cited and whether your brand is named in it. Repeat monthly. The AI visibility checker runs a live ChatGPT and Perplexity citation check.
- Weight Perplexity and Google. In the Profound data, they were the two engines where Reddit led by volume. Our guides to ranking on Perplexity and how each engine picks sources cover the differences.
- Treat Reddit as one input. If ChatGPT's use of Reddit keeps shifting, your own pages, reviews and comparison content still have to carry citations. The broader playbook is in How to Get Cited by ChatGPT.
- Keep Reddit presence honest. Threads are cited when they contain real answers. Reply to the question, disclose who you are, and let a human approve each reply. RedditGrow finds the threads where people are already asking for what you sell, but no tool changes how often any engine cites Reddit.
Methodology and sources
This page compiles published third-party studies. We did not run our own citation dataset for this edition, and we do not publish RedditGrow first-party figures here. Each figure above comes from the cited source's own page, read on October 22, 2026, and is reported with the study's period and sample where the source gave them. Where a source does not state a sample size (Promptwatch, LLM Pulse), we say so.
Limits: the sources come from five publishers, all commercial AI-visibility vendors or marketing and agency blogs, not peer-reviewed research. Their prompt sets, engines and counting rules differ, so figures are not additive and should not be averaged. Vendors revise their datasets, so check the original page before quoting a number. We will update this page when new studies appear.

FAQ
How often does ChatGPT cite Reddit?
It depends on the study and the week. Profound measured Reddit at 1.8% of ChatGPT citations between August 2024 and June 2025. Agenzy, using Peec AI data, measured 3.0% between January 2025 and September 2026. Semrush saw Reddit in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August 2025, then around 10% by mid-September 2025.
Which AI engine cites Reddit the most?
Perplexity, in the studies that compare engines. Profound found Reddit at 6.6% of all Perplexity citations (2.2% for Google AI Overviews, 1.8% for ChatGPT). Agenzy's later data ranks ChatGPT first, so the order is not stable.
Is Reddit the most cited domain in AI search?
Not in every dataset. LLM Pulse ranked Reddit second (8.29% of AI answers) behind YouTube on October 21, 2026. Profound ranked Reddit first on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and Wikipedia first on ChatGPT.
Did Reddit lose its ChatGPT citations?
ChatGPT's use of Reddit dropped sharply twice: from roughly 60% to roughly 10% of responses between early August and mid-September 2025 (Semrush), and from a 3.8% share (July 18 to August 7, 2026) to 0.5% (August 14 to 17, 2026) per Promptwatch, which calls the drop provisional. In the same 2026 period, Semrush reported Google AI Overviews down 11% and AI Mode down 31%, citing Axios.
Why do Reddit citation numbers differ so much between studies?
They count different things: share of all citations, share of a top-10 list, share of answers that contain at least one Reddit link, or share of tracked projects where Reddit appears. They also use different prompts, engines and dates.
