How to Fix a Reddit Shadowban: Appeal, Wait, or Start Over

To fix a Reddit shadowban: confirm it first with a logged-out check and r/ShadowBan, then submit one short, factual appeal at reddit.com/appeals. Most shadowbans are applied automatically, which is why appeals succeed at an estimated 60–70% rate. Expect 3 to 7 days for a response. Do not create a second account while you wait — that is what turns a recoverable shadowban into a permanent suspension.

Here is the full process, including the part where you decide the account is not worth saving.

Step 1 — Confirm it is actually a shadowban

Do not skip this. Most people who think they are shadowbanned are not. Run all three checks:

  • Logged-out test. Open one of your recent comments in a private browsing window. Gone means invisible to the world. Present means your account is fine.
  • The appeals page. Visit reddit.com/appeals while logged in. A site-wide shadowban displays a notice at the top.
  • r/ShadowBan. Post there and a bot replies with your account status. This is the community-standard check.

Our free shadowban checker runs the visibility tests for any username in a few seconds. If it comes back clean, your problem is a subreddit ban or an AutoMod rule — this guide walks through telling them apart, and the fix is entirely different.

Step 2 — Work out what triggered it

You need this for the appeal, and you need it so the same thing does not happen to the replacement account. The usual causes:

  • A new account that posted links before building any comment history
  • The same URL posted across several subreddits in a short window
  • An IP shared with a previously banned account — including office networks, some VPN exit nodes, and shared hosting
  • Rapid-fire posting that reads as automation
  • Multiple accounts operated from the same device or network

Be honest with yourself here. An appeal that denies something Reddit can see in its logs is a wasted appeal, and you generally get one good shot.

Step 3 — Write the appeal

Go to reddit.com/appeals while logged into the affected account. The form is short. So should your message be.

What works: a factual account of what you were doing, an acknowledgement of what may have looked automated, and a plain statement of what you will do differently. Three or four sentences.

A workable template:

"My account appears to be shadowbanned. I am an individual user, not a bot. I believe I may have been flagged for posting links to my own project across a few subreddits in a short period. I have read the self-promotion guidelines and will keep my participation to genuine discussion with clear disclosure. I would appreciate a review."

What sinks appeals: accusing Reddit of censorship, sending the same appeal repeatedly, writing several paragraphs of context, or claiming you did nothing at all when you did.

Step 4 — Wait properly

Appeals typically take 3 to 7 days, sometimes longer. During that window:

  • Do not create another account. Ban evasion is a policy violation in its own right and it will cost you the appeal.
  • Do not keep posting. Nobody can see it, and continued activity from a flagged account does not help.
  • Do not submit a second appeal. It resets nothing and reads as spam.

Step 5 — If it is lifted, rebuild carefully

A lifted shadowban does not restore your standing — it restores your visibility. The account is still flagged internally, and the second offense is treated far less generously.

  1. Two weeks, comments only, zero links. Participate in communities you actually read.
  2. Rebuild karma before you post anything promotional. See how to build Reddit karma and what each type of subreddit requires.
  3. One community at a time. Establish standing in a single subreddit before branching out.
  4. Disclose everything. "Full disclosure, I built this" costs you nothing and protects you completely.

Step 6 — Deciding to start over

Sometimes the account is not worth saving. Start fresh if all of the following are true:

  • Your appeal was refused, or you have had no response after roughly three weeks
  • The account had little karma or history worth preserving
  • You understand the trigger and will not repeat it

If you do start over, do it cleanly: a different email, and — critically — delete the old account rather than running both. Two accounts operating in parallel from the same network is the pattern that produces a permanent suspension rather than a recoverable shadowban.

And treat the new account as an asset with a warm-up period, not a disposable. Our warm-up guide lays out the phased schedule; RedditGrow runs that schedule for you and checks account health before every post, which is the point — the fix for a shadowban is mostly not getting one.

What does not work

  • Waiting it out. Shadowbans do not expire the way temporary suspensions do. Without an appeal, most simply persist.
  • Deleting your old posts. It does not signal contrition to an automated system, and it destroys any karma you had.
  • Changing your IP or using a VPN. The ban is on the account, not the connection — and unusual IP behavior is itself a flag.
  • Buying an aged account. Purchased accounts are heavily flagged, and account trading is against Reddit's rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Reddit shadowban last?

There is no fixed term. Unlike a temporary suspension, a shadowban does not expire on its own — it persists until it is lifted on appeal. Appeals typically get a response within 3 to 7 days.

What is the success rate of a Reddit shadowban appeal?

Commonly estimated at 60 to 70 percent, notably higher than for suspensions, because most shadowbans are applied automatically and many are mistakes.

Can I just make a new account instead of appealing?

You can, but delete the old one first and do not run both. Operating a replacement account while the original is banned is ban evasion, which escalates a recoverable shadowban into a permanent suspension.

Will deleting my posts lift a shadowban?

No. The action is on the account, not on individual posts, and deleting content only costs you the karma you had built.
