Best Time to Post on Reddit (2026 Data): What Two Studies Show

7 min read

The best time to post on Reddit is the hour when your target subreddit is awake and not yet crowded. No single slot wins everywhere: in 2026 data, the best window moved by subreddit, by day and by what the study counted. The numbers below come from two public datasets and Reddit's own archived ranking code, with their limits stated.

Key takeaways

  • Developer and startup subreddits peak at 14:00 to 17:00 UTC. That window was 37.0% above average activity across 12 subreddits and nearly 3 million posts and comments (Syften, May 2026).
  • Tuesday is the best posting day in that dataset, Wednesday the best commenting day (Syften, May 2026).
  • The busiest hour block is not the best one. 9 AM to noon Eastern held 18.9% of top posts but had a median of 5,144 upvotes, against 11,334 for 3 to 6 PM (redditapis, July 2026).
  • Sunday had the highest median upvotes among top posts (8,938) with 13.2% of volume (redditapis, July 2026).
  • Post age counts heavily. In the Hot formula in Reddit's archived source code, 12.5 hours of age cancels a tenfold lead in score.
  • The best day for a post ranged from Monday to Saturday across the 12 subreddits Syften broke out.

The short answer

If you sell to founders, developers or marketers, start with weekday posts that go live between 14:00 and 17:00 UTC (10:00 to 13:00 US Eastern in daylight time, 9:00 to 12:00 in standard time), then test an early-morning and an evening slot. If you post to a broad or consumer subreddit, the top-post data points to 6 to 9 AM and 3 to 9 PM Eastern, with weekends worth a test.

Treat both as starting hypotheses. Each is observational data from a different sample.

Why timing matters: how Reddit ranks new posts

Reddit's ranking is time-weighted. The Hot sort in the archived reddit-archive/reddit repository (r2/r2/lib/db/_sorts.pyx, archived in November 2017) computes the score as sign * log10(max(|score|, 1)) + seconds / 45000, where seconds is the post's timestamp relative to a fixed reference point and score is upvotes minus downvotes.

Two consequences follow from those constants:

  • The vote term is logarithmic. Going from 10 to 100 net votes adds 1 point, the same as going from 100 to 1,000, so early votes count most.
  • The time term adds 1 point per 45,000 seconds (12.5 hours). A post that is 12.5 hours newer starts with the same advantage as a tenfold higher score.

The same arithmetic explains an older rule of thumb from Randal Olson's 2014 analysis of the formula: a 12-hour-old post needs roughly 3x the score of a 6-hour-old post to be as hot, and the first 6 hours are the most important. The archive was frozen in 2017 and may not match Reddit's current ranking, which we could not check, so read this as the best public evidence, not a guarantee. The practical point holds in either case: a post that picks up votes while the audience is online starts ahead.

Dataset 1: activity in 12 developer and startup subreddits

Source: Syften, "Best Time to Post on Reddit in 2026: Data From 12 Devtool Subreddits", published May 26, 2026. The sample is 2,999,442 posts and comments (377,741 posts and 2,621,701 comments) from November 16, 2025 to May 26, 2026, in UTC. It measures activity volume, not upvotes, conversions or moderation outcomes.

Metric Result
Best 3-hour window, all activity 14:00 to 17:00 UTC (+37.0% above average)
Best single hour 15:00 UTC
Best 3-hour window for posts 14:00 to 17:00 UTC (+40.5%)
Best 3-hour window for comments 14:00 to 17:00 UTC (+36.5%)
Best day to post Tuesday
Best day to comment Wednesday

The subreddit breakdown matters more than the average. According to Syften, the best posting window was 14:00 to 17:00 UTC in most of the 12 communities, but not all of them:

Subreddit Best post day Best post window (UTC)
r/SaaS Tuesday 14:00 to 17:00
r/SideProject Tuesday 14:00 to 17:00
r/startups Tuesday 16:00 to 19:00
r/webdev Saturday 14:00 to 17:00
r/selfhosted Friday 14:00 to 17:00
r/devops Monday 14:00 to 17:00
r/programming Monday 14:00 to 17:00
r/dataengineering Monday 15:00 to 18:00
r/ExperiencedDevs Wednesday 16:00 to 19:00
r/homelab Monday 17:00 to 20:00
r/kubernetes Tuesday 14:00 to 17:00
r/sysadmin Tuesday 14:00 to 17:00

For founders, r/SaaS, r/SideProject and r/startups are the relevant rows: Tuesday, with r/startups running two hours later than the other two.

Post volume also differs sharply by community. Posts were 34.5% of activity in r/SideProject and 14.8% in r/SaaS, against 3.5% in r/sysadmin and 2.6% in r/ExperiencedDevs (Syften, 2026). In r/SideProject a new post lands among many others; in r/ExperiencedDevs most activity is discussion.

Dataset 2: when top posts were created

Source: redditapis, "Best Time to Post on Reddit in 2026 (6,600-Post Data Study)", data retrieved July 9, 2026. The sample is 6,600 top posts of the trailing 12 months from 22 subreddits (up to 300 per subreddit), converted to US Eastern time. The author states the study is observational and survivorship-weighted toward winners. redditapis sells a Reddit data API.

Median upvotes by three-hour block (Eastern):

Block Median upvotes
3 to 6 PM 11,334
6 to 9 PM 11,313
6 to 9 AM 10,429
9 AM to noon 5,144

The 9 AM to noon block held the largest share of top posts (18.9%) and had the lowest median of the four. Roughly 65% of top posts were created between 6 AM and 6 PM Eastern, and about 14% between midnight and 6 AM.

Strongest single hours by median upvotes: 6 PM (15,368), 4 PM (12,767), 6 AM (12,295), 7 PM (11,203). The weakest listed hour was 1 AM (2,172).

Days of the week:

Day Median upvotes Share of top posts
Sunday 8,938 13.2%
Wednesday 7,022 15.3%
Tuesday 6,968 15.3%
Monday 6,773 14.9%
Saturday 5,937 13.1%
Friday 5,292 13.3%
Thursday 4,802 14.9%

Weekends produced 26.3% of top posts with a median of 7,266 upvotes, against 73.7% and 5,958 for weekdays.

The two business-oriented subreddits in the sample were much smaller in absolute terms. The best block for r/Entrepreneur was Thursday from noon to 3 PM Eastern (median 215 upvotes), and for r/marketing Wednesday from 9 AM to noon (median 71). Both come from a single study and a limited sample per subreddit, so treat them as leads to test, not rules.

Why the two studies disagree

They measure different things.

  • Activity versus outcome. Syften counts how many posts and comments are created. redditapis looks at which top posts earned the most upvotes. The first tells you when people are online. The second hints at when a post can stand out.
  • Different communities. One sample is 12 developer and startup subreddits. The other is 22 subreddits that include very large general-interest communities.
  • Different clocks. Syften reports UTC. redditapis converts to US Eastern.
  • Different survivors. A top-posts sample only contains posts that already won, so it cannot show how many posts posted at the same hour got nothing.

Both agree on one point: the answer changes by subreddit. For a B2B product, the audience's working hours matter more than a platform-wide average.

How to pick your own window

  1. List the 3 to 5 subreddits where your buyers ask questions. Skip any you cannot post in under the rules. See how to find customers on Reddit and the best subreddits for SaaS founders.
  2. Pull each subreddit's top posts and group them by day and hour. The free post-timing tool does this for any subreddit from up to 200 top posts, with no signup.
  3. Convert to your audience's timezone, not yours. A UTC window of 14:00 to 17:00 is morning in New York and late afternoon in Berlin.
  4. Test two or three slots for 2 to 4 weeks. Post comparable content, and compare upvotes and replies in the first 6 hours.
  5. Re-check every 4 to 8 weeks. Audience patterns shift slowly, and a growing subreddit can shift faster.

Timing is the last lever, not the first. redditapis notes that a brand-new account's first posts are often held for review by automated moderation whatever the hour, so build the account first: Reddit karma requirements and how to build Reddit karma fast cover that. Once your reply is useful and fits the rules, timing improves its odds of being seen. For threads that already exist, Syften makes the same point: when someone asks a question in your category, answer while the thread is active rather than waiting for a better slot. RedditGrow flags those threads as they appear.

Methodology and sources

Last updated October 22, 2026. We did not run our own timing study for this page; every figure comes from the sources below, checked against those pages on October 22, 2026.

Limits: both datasets are observational, neither measures conversions or replies to a product, and the UTC conversions to Eastern time above are ours. Reddit's ranking and audience change, so verify before you rely on a figure.
