AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What Each One Actually Means

SEO optimizes for ranked links. AEO — answer engine optimization — optimizes for being the answer in a direct-answer surface like a featured snippet or an AI Overview. GEO — generative engine optimization — optimizes for being cited inside text an AI model generates, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Gemini. In practice AEO and GEO overlap heavily, and much of the industry now uses the terms interchangeably.

The distinction is worth understanding anyway, because the three surfaces reward different things — and because the terminology fight tells you something about how young this field is.

Where the terms came from

"Generative engine optimization" was introduced by researchers at Princeton and Georgia Tech in a November 2023 paper. "Answer engine optimization" grew out of the earlier featured-snippet and voice-search era and was already in use.

Since then the industry has argued about which is correct. Forbes has published the case for dropping GEO in favor of AEO, on the grounds that these systems answer questions and generation is merely the mechanism. Others hold that GEO names something genuinely different: not optimizing a page for a query, but shaping how a model represents your brand as an entity across every output.

Both readings are defensible. Neither will change what you actually do on Tuesday.

The one real difference that matters

SEO and AEO are both largely won on your own pages. GEO is not.

Generative engines answer by consensus. When someone asks "what's the best tool for X," the model is not reading your homepage and taking your word for it — it is synthesizing what many sources say about you. In practice that means "best X for Y" listicles, review platforms like G2 and Capterra, comparison articles, and above all Reddit.

A Semrush analysis of 150,000 AI citations across 5,000 keywords found 40.1% pointed at Reddit — ahead of Wikipedia at 26.3% and YouTube at 23.5%. Reddit is not one source among many in AI answers; it is the largest single one.

The practical consequence: you can do flawless AEO on your own site and still be invisible in GEO, because your competitors are the ones being named in the threads the model reads.

What to actually do, in order

Keep doing SEO

Google AI Overviews summarize top-ranking pages. Ranking is still the entry ticket to the AI surface on Google, so SEO has not stopped mattering — it has become a prerequisite rather than a destination.

Do AEO on your own pages

  • Open every page with a self-contained 40–60 word answer to its core question.
  • Phrase H2s and H3s the way people ask questions.
  • Use tables for comparisons and numbered lists for processes — both are extracted disproportionately often.
  • Add FAQPage, HowTo, and Article schema.
  • Show a visible last-updated date and keep competitive pages fresh.

Do GEO off your own pages

  • Get named in the "best X" listicles that rank for your category.
  • Maintain review-platform presence — G2, Capterra, AlternativeTo.
  • Show up genuinely in the Reddit threads where your category gets discussed.
  • Keep your entity details consistent everywhere a model might read them.

How to measure each one

SEORankings, organic sessionsSearch Console, rank tracker
AEOSnippet and AI Overview ownershipSERP monitoring on your target queries
GEOCitation rate and share of AI voiceA fixed prompt set, run monthly across engines

The GEO row is the one most teams skip because it has no console. It does not need one: pick 30 prompts a buyer would actually type, run them across engines monthly, and record who gets named. This guide covers the scoring methodology, and our free AI visibility checker automates the Reddit-citation side of it.

So which term should you use?

Use whichever your audience uses, and define it once when you do. If you are writing for SEO practitioners, AEO reads as the natural extension of what they already do. If you are writing for founders and executives, GEO has more mindshare because it names the thing that is new. The work underneath is the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AEO the same thing as GEO?

Nearly. AEO emphasizes direct-answer surfaces like featured snippets and AI Overviews; GEO emphasizes being cited inside generated text and how a model represents your brand as an entity. Most practitioners now use them interchangeably, and the tactical overlap is large.

Does SEO still matter if AI answers most queries?

Yes. Google AI Overviews summarize top-ranking pages, so ranking is the entry ticket to that surface. SEO has shifted from being the destination to being a prerequisite.

What is the biggest difference between SEO and GEO in practice?

Where the work happens. SEO is won mostly on your own pages; GEO is won substantially off them, through third-party sources — listicles, review platforms, and Reddit — that models treat as consensus.

Which AI engines matter most for GEO?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Copilot. They share selection logic — extractable structure plus trusted third-party corroboration — so optimizing for one meaningfully helps with the others.
